Harvested by fishermen, only 1 in 10,000 conchs have a pearl in them, of which approximately 10% are considered jewelry quality. Conch pearls come in a variety of colors, from dark browns, pale yellows and whites, to the most valuable, pinks. These pearls are especially prized for the way their growth creates a “flame structure” in their surface. The best pearls have this structure easily visible against a well saturated pink background. These pearls may have a semi-chatoyant effect as well. This set was acquired by the team behind Gem Bleu as a piece from the estate of Constance Barber Mellon and Constance “Connie” Prosser Mellon, mother and daughter from the prominent Pennsylvania banking family behind the Mellon Trust Bank and Carnegie Mellon University. The pearls in this set are all beautiful pinks with stunning saturation and visible flame structure. We believe this piece is from Constance Barber Mellon, as she was well known to love more classic styling and pieces. Both Constances were well known for their sense of style and were considered fashion icons in their own right. **1.
