Edwardian Fly Bar Brooch with Three Ascending Flies

About the Item

An Edwardian fly bar brooch featuring four Gem-set flies, each fly with an oval demantoid garnet thorax and half pearl set wings with cabochon ruby-set eyes, the one upon a bar brooch with the three smaller flies suspended beneath, circa 1900, measuring approximately 5.4x4.6cm, gross weight 7.5 grams. This antique brooch is in excellent condition. Unmarked, tested as 18ct gold with 14ct gold pin. This whimsical Edwardian bar brooch was made in around 1900 and comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. During the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras, it became popular for jewellery to depict insects in a naturalistic manner. The aim of such jewels was to cleverly deceive the eye into thinking a live insect had landed on the wearer. This brooch is a wonderful example of this playful style, featuring four flies in graduating sizes each with a demantoid garnet body and pearl-set wings. The flies are suspended from an elegant bar brooch, on which sits the largest of the flies. Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.
