About the Item

An antique Egyptian revival scarab brooch, the cabochon-cut sapphire in a rub-over setting with rose cut diamond details, the outstretched curved wings with green and white enamel work and rubies, all in 14ct yellow gold, bearing the hallmarks for Austro-Hungarian 1872-1922, with Vienna assay and maker’s mark, circa 1880, measuring approximately 2.9x1.8 cm, gross weight 4.7 grams. This antique brooch is in excellent condition. A striking antique Egyptian revival scarab brooch from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. After Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign in 1798, Egyptian symbolism and styles became very popular in the nineteenth century. This brooch follows in that tradition, and features a stunning cabochon-cut sapphire that makes up the body of the Scarab, studded with diamonds and flanked by wings of enamel and ruby. This brooch would be exquisite on a scarf or lapel and would add drama to any outfit. Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Egyptian Revival Plique A Jour Enamel Winged Scarab Insect Brooch Pin Art Deco
Located in New York, NY
A rare Art Deco Egyptian Revival masterpiece of a Winged Scarab Insect Brooch done in Plique a Jour Enamel over Silver. The Museum Quality brooch depicts a winged Scarab beetle, one of the signature motifs of the Egyptian Revival movement. The brooch is done with extraordinary Purple and Green iridescent Plique a Jour Enamel. Plique Enamel requires the skills of a master artisan to create. When finished, the Plique enamel creates a see through enamel which allows light to shine through, reminiscent of a stained glass window. This brooch is a masterpiece of the technique and one of the most beautiful pieces we have seen. The brooch pin is Silver with a gold wash. It dates to the Art Nouveau to Art Deco period, circa 1880-1920. It has its early C-clasp. The brooch could be easily converted to a pendant necklace if desired. Plique-à-jour (French for "letting in daylight") is a vitreous enameling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained-glass and is considered very challenging technically: high time...
