Stunning estate Mario Buccellati High Jewelry cabochon opal 18K yellow and patinated white gold spider web cocktail ring Mid 20th Century The large cabochon opal displaying a striking array of colors ranging from turquoise, blue, pink and gold with strong color change qualities, appearing more intense at night and against dark backgronds and lighter in daylight. The gem is set in a finely detailed yellow gold setting which forms a spider web design against a textured patinated white gold background. The name opal is believed to derive from the Sanskrit "upala", which means precious stone, as well as the Greek "opallios". Historically, opals were very rare and highly prized as a result. Napoleon I presented a fabulous opal called The Burning of Troy to Josephine, the first opal to be named.
