George Shiebler Bat Moon Brooch Pin Homeric Pendant Sterling Silver
About the Item
This is an extraordinary Brooch by George W. Shiebler and Company in the form of a moon with a bat flying across the moon with one of Shiebler's iconic Homeric pendants hanging from the moon. The absolutely wonderful design in Sterling Silver with the moon and bat is exceedingly rare. Shiebler and Co. was a highly innovative and influential New York City firm that produced a diverse array of artistic silver wares and jewelry in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. During the later years of the nineteenth century a passion arose in both Europe and America for jewelry inspired by ancient coins, and this brooch is one example of the Shiebler firm's interpretation of that trend. An 1892 “Jewelers' Circular and Horological Review” article on the Shiebler firm described this "curio medallion work" as looking "as though it had been unearthed at Pompeii and Herculanaeum." The same article attests to the popularity of the line, stating that sales of what Shiebler described as his "Homeric Style" jewelry were "unprecedented perhaps in the history of the trade." Arguably the finest American silver manufacturer of the 19th century, their medallion pieces were simply without peer.
The look is au courant preceding the neo-classical jewelry of Gage, Locke, and Seidengang by a century.
The moon is 2 1/2 inches (6.5cm) tall and 1 3/4 inches wide. The medallion is 5/8 inch in diameter.
