Gilt metal, fuschia and amethyst paste brooch/earrings, Christian Dior, c. 1954

About the Item

An unusual brooch and earrings from Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer, made of articulated twisted gilt rings of various sizes, highlighted with amethyst, light amethyst and fuschia pastes, both earrings and brooches are articulated. A structured design, rather than floral or naturalistic, which makes this somewhat different for Dior jewellery of this time. Wearable, whether altogether of seperately, and collectible. Christian Dior was born into a wealthy family in 1905, being raised in the Normandy seaside town of Granville. Working first for Robert Piguet and then for Lucien Lelong as a head designer, during the war years, he then opened his own couture house. His now highly celebrated and iconic first collection ‘Corolle’ caused a sensation, and is now known by its more famous name ‘New Look’. From the very beginning in 1947, jewellery played a very prominent part in his collections, initially recalling the pomp and grandeur of the 18th century , its femininity and glamour, and later moving into extravagant experiments with Austrian stones and paste, throughout the late 1950s until the 1970s.

A mirrored glass and talousel brooch and earrings, Line Vautrin, France, 1960s
By Line Vautrin
Located in Greyabbey, County Down
This Talousel and mirrored glass brooch and earrings is a fine example of the later work of Line Vautrin from the 1960s. A most beautiful and unusual colour, each piece is truly artisan, made and assembled by hand. The delicate mirrored and resin elements are stacked or jumbled, on top of each other, to create an utterly delightful and original design, highly typical of this magical designer. An astounding artist, the truly individual Line Vautrin was named a ‘poetess in metal’ by Vogue magazine in 1948, starting her career in such prestigious surroundings, making buttons for Schiaparelli. She went on create some of the most extraordinary and individual jewellery, artists’ jewellery in very poetic and clever designs. Soft blue glass cabuchon and large pearl five point earrings, French, 1960s
Located in Greyabbey, County Down
A striking pair of 'cruxiform earrings, of excellent quality and weight. Very much in the style of Chanel of this period (1960s) , they sadly are not signed, but they bear all the qualities and motifs of Maison Goossens, creator and collaborator with Coco Chanel in designing iconic jewellery for the House of Chanel. That aside, they are highly wearable and, in their soft shade of blue, very versatile. Robert Goossens was a great artist, and one of the last great masters of the golden age of costume jewellery. He is most well known for his magical collaboration with Coco Chanel, commencing in the mid 1950s and continuing through to her death. Together, they created ’Byzantine’ jewels, celebrated for its crosses, and cruxiform brooches. Chanel gave him a freedom of expression ,so that he was able to realise and affirm her wonderful vision - he felt that this collaboration with Chanel was the highest point of his carrer and recounted many tales of it throughout his later life. He also had a celebrated collaboration with Yves Saint Laurent, creating many of the most fabulous and iconic piece for the couture house. At the beginning, he made the pieces by hand himself, expanding to seven artisans, then with 48 employees in the 1980s and 90s. The atelier continues today, run by his son and daughter.
