Gustav Manz for F. Walter Lawrence Art Nouveau Chimera Brooch

Buyer Protection Guaranteed

This brooch is by Master jeweler and designer, Gustav Manz who is recognized for his exquisitely detailed representations of the animal kingdom.
This Art Nouveau chimera clutches and fiercely guards a large cushion cut garnet. The depth and dimensionality of the detailing and modeling is extraordinary and unlike many Art Nouveau pieces, it is completely detailed in the round.
The combination of the patinaed green gold against the garnet is stunning. It is a miniature work of art and is deceptively heavy for a smaller brooch.
Manz is enjoying a renaissance of interest now that it is known he supplied many of the greatest jewelry houses of the period with his designs, heretofor uncredited.
F.W. Lawrence was a salon retailer in the 19th Century and it is known that Manz sold to them as well designed for them in instances such as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition held in Saint Louis in 1904. Research reveals that he crafted twenty-five of the twenty-seven pieces displayed by F. Walter Lawrence at the Exposition.
In 1952, A. M. Veghte of F. Walter Lawrence, stated "Gustav Manz... was the finest carver of animal jewelry during his years in the jewelry business. His journals and extant works document innumerable examples adorned with, among other creatures, panthers, elephants, bulls, bears, snakes, dogs, eagles, and peacocks. His little wearable animal sculptures are naturalistically rendered, detailed, and almost (if not completely) fully modeled in space"...c.o. the Gustav Manz blog.
