$490

About

A stunning and impressive 1950s brooch and earring set by famous American designer of the early and mid 20th century Hattie Carnegie. The brooch is large 2.75 inches in diameter, lightly domed and .88 of an inch deep at the highest point. Each clip back earring is 1 inch wide, 1.25 inches long and mirror images of each other. There is a right and a left earring. The brooch and earrings have a .5 inch diameter vitrail II or watermelon rhinestone surrounded by fuchsia rhinestones. Additionally, the brooch and earrings have marquise and round shape rhinestones in pale pink, medium pink, olivine, purple and teal / purple heliotrope. The gold plate is a rich gold color. The back of the brooch has an oval signature plaque inscribed Hattie Carnegie in script. The earrings are unsigned but obviously a match to the brooch and by Hattie Carnegie. Very good condition. Hattie Carnegie was born in Vienna, Austria and came to the US as a youth. As a young adult she opened a hat making business with a partner. Eventually, her partner left and the company became Hattie's own. She began to go to Paris to bring French fashion back to the US to sell in her store and to inspire her design. She is credited with introducing French fashion designers and making their designs available to the US market. Additionally, Carnegie discovered and nurtured the talents of many prominent American designers, including Norman Norell, Pauline Trigère, and James Galanos. During World War II French haute couture came to a standstill. Carnegie rose to prominence on the international stage as an authority on fashion, and her works were seen in the theatre, cinema and on magazine covers. Carnegie passed away in 1956, having been instrumental in the awareness of Parisian fashion and its introduction to American society. She was extremely influential and nurtured some of the finest US fashion designers of the early and mid 20th century. Her designs covered all aspects of fashion including hats, handbags, gloves, jewelry, furs, lingerie, cosmetics, and perfume.
