Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Throughout the 19th century, British astronomers made many advances, building on the enormous base of precise observations provided to them by their predecessors in the 1700s. Using the new technique of spectroscopy, they worked to determine the composition of heavenly bodies, while breakthroughs in understanding the geology of the earth -many made by passionate amateur scientists as diverse as surveyors and Anglican clergy - helped them discover the facts about the nature of the moon and newly discovered planets. It was in fact an Anglican priest who first advanced his well-supported theory that the earth was indeed more than a billion years old.
