Lapponia Brooch Labyrinth Björn Weckström Finland Modernist Man From Mercury

About the Item

This is a stunning brooch by Björn Weckström for Lapponia Jewelry, from the Space Series, the vintage modernist sculptural sterling silver “Labyrinth” brooch, 1987. This is a superb museum quality Lapponia brooch from Finland by Björn Weckström entitled Labyrinth. This brooch is part of the Space Series or Man From Mercury series began in 1969. The series features elegant sculpted water and landscapes with human figures lost or striving. They are reminiscent of dreams - so perhaps 'dreamscape' is a good description. This amazing modernist brooch depicts a man standing alone and enclosed by a sweeping alien landscape. It is sculptural and graceful. Founded in Finland in 1960, Lapponia has a team of international designers, but the most famous is Björn Weckström, who designed the first collection in 1963. His sculpture-like jewelry, is unique and spectacular and this is a stunning example of his work and truly evokes the Finnish landscape of snow and glaciers. The brooch has a mixture of soft textured surfaces and polished ridges that give it a sculptural richness. I've included images from all angles to capture the superb shapes. Full hallmarking as follows: 925 & scales - Finland National Mark; crown within a heart - Helsinki city mark; W - makers mark; 925; K8 - year 1987 and Lapponia. On the reverse, it secures with a trombone push safety clasp. Dimensions are: 1 1/2 inch x 1 3/4 inch and the height is 7/8 inch. Weight is a substantial 25 grams and it is in perfect condition. This is a spectacular brooch from one of the most important jewelry designers working today and is a superb example of modernist Scandinavian design. We have just returned from Finland with a wonderful collection of Finnish MId Century Modernist Jewelry - please take a look at our listings and watch the upcoming sales.

Lapponia Björn Weckström Man In Cosmos Ring Acrylic Sterling Silver Finland
By Björn Weckström for Lapponia
Located in New York, NY
This is the very rare Modernist "Man In Cosmos" Ring by Finnish jewelry designer Björn Weckström for Lapponia in Acrylic Crystal and Sterling Silver. The classic Mid Century brutalist piece was designed in the 1970s for Lapponia Jewelry in Finland and made in Helsinki. The adjustable size ring is Acrylic with bubbles and has a silver figure with outstretched arms inside of the acrylic bubble. The ring has the undulating brutalist naturalistic forms that characterize the masterworks of Weckstrom and Lapponia along with the extraordinary bubble design! It is absolutely magical. Bjorn Weckstrom's pieces define Scandinavian modernism. They are exquisitely designed and timeless. This classic ring is one of the greats by a master artisan of the 20th Century. The ring is adjustable and is currently a size 6 US. The ring is adjustable by gently bending the silver shank. Acrylic diameter: 1 1/8 inches, 27mm Impressed Marks: FINLAND, Manufacturer´s mark Lapponia. 925 Designer name Björn. Date mark - I cannot decipher. Björn Weckström: Björn Weckström was the first designer who radically combined silver and acrylic in jewelry. His silver-acrylic ring achieved international attention when Yoko Ono was filmed wearing it on the Dick Cavett Show in 1975. Weckstrom masterworks are characterized by rough matt surfaces, uncut semi-precious stones and asymmetrical forms. His inspiration comes often from nature. When working in silver, Weckström can for example portray the snowy, Finnish winter landscape with its frozen lakes. Weckström considers jewelry as an art form and his designs as miniature sculptures. In 1963 Björn Weckström started co-operation with jewelry manufacturer Kruunu-Koru Oy (later Lapponia Jewelry) and its owner Pekka Anttila. Weckström became company’s designer and art director. In 1965 Weckström took part in the International Jewelry Contest in Rio de Janeiro, where his yellowgold and tourmaline necklace “Flowering wall” won the Grand Prix. Through this distinguished award, the company received worldwide recognition, launching Lapponia’s international success. His designs have been in continuous production with Lapponia ever since. Probably the best-known piece of Weckström’s jewelry is necklace Planetoid Valleys which Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) wore in George Lucas’ film Star Wars in 1977.
