Late Victorian Diamond Lyre Brooch

About the Item

A Victorian diamond lyre brooch, set throughout with old brilliant-cut diamonds estimated to weigh a total of 7.2 carats, the centre with laurel leaf motif to gold strings, all set in silver to a yellow gold mount, circa 1880, gross weight 7.61 grams A magnificent late Victorian brooch. This brooch is crafted in the shape of a lyre and captures the late Victorian interest in neoclassical themes. The lyre is an instrument that was frequently played in Ancient Greece, particularly during the recitation of lyric poetry. Lyres appear in many examples of Ancient Greek art, from vases to statues. In the Victorian era, the lyre symbolised poetry, and with it, romantic associations of creativity and art. This lyre is set with dazzling old-cut diamonds that scintillate beautifully, weighing a total of over seven carats. The strings of the instrument are crafted from yellow gold, with a laurel motif, a further neoclassical symbol, set within them. This piece evokes the cultural peak of Ancient Greece and both the music and poetry that would be played by such an instrument. This stunning piece comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and captures the alluring style and delicate craftsmanship of the late Victorian era. This antique brooch is in fine condition. Unmarked, tested as 14ct gold and silver.
