Late Victorian Fun Monkey Bar Brooch

About the Item

A late Victorian fun monkey bar brooch, the bar set with rose-cut diamonds either end with a monkey sitting in the centre with rose-cut diamond set body and ruby set eyes, with one hand holding a similarly decorated monkey hanging from the bar, with a chain attached to the tail suspending a swinging baby monkey with rose-cut diamonds and ruby eyes, all set in silver, stamped 'STERLING', circa 1900, measuring approximately 6.8 x 3.7cm, gross weight 8.4grams. This charming monkey brooch comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. The brooch features a monkey sitting on a bar, from which is suspended a further monkey who hangs onto the bar and a third baby monkey that is suspended from a chain on the second monkey’s tail. All three monkeys are set throughout with glittering diamonds and have vivid ruby eyes, and the bar on which the largest monkey rests features additional sparkling diamonds. This playful piece captures the spirit of late-Victorian novelty jewellery, which was intended to charm and delight. This antique brooch is in good condition for its age. Marked Sterling on the back, probably American.
