Mid-Century Winking Cat Emerald Diamond Onyx Brooch Yellow Gold English 1950s
About the Item
Mid-Century winking cat emerald, diamond and onyx brooch in 18kt yellow and white gold, London, 1958. This enchanting brooch, reminiscent of the coveted "Chat Malicieux" design by Van Cleef & Arpels, stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of 1950s jewelry. Fashioned in rich textured yellow gold, this piece is shaped into a stylized, winking feline that exudes character and charm. The fur is rendered with meticulous detail, providing a lifelike texture that is both visually and tactilely appealing. One eye remains coyly closed, while the other holds a captivating circular cabochon emerald surrounded by four single-cut diamonds, imbuing the brooch with a mischievous and sophisticated glint. An oval cabochon black onyx forms the body, offering a sleek counterbalance to the textured gold and completing the piece with a touch of elegance. The cat's fluffy tail, executed with the same attention to detail, curves gracefully downwards. As an accessory, this brooch would have been at the forefront of avant-garde fashion, embodying the playful luxury that defined the design sensibilities of its time.
Emerald: Circular cabochon; estimated 0.12ct.
Diamonds: 4 stones; single-cut; estimated 0.04ct total.
London Hallmark for 18kt gold; date letter “C” for 1958; maker’s mark “SSS”.
Dimensions: 4.6 x 2.5 cm. Gross Weight: 21.57g.
