Victorian brooch in Very good condition. Unmarked tested as 18ct gold.
The Thebes Scarab Pendant by Robert Phillips, c. 1865, comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Revivalist jewellery, recalling Ancient Egyptian, Greco-Roman, and Renaissance styles, was very popular in the nineteenth century and Robert Phillips was one of London’s most important revivalist jewellers. This particular pendant is created in the Egyptian revival style, featuring an amalgam of Ancient Egyptian motifs such as the scarab, the cobra, and the jar and fan shapes. About two years after the creation of this piece, Phillips won a gold medal at the 1867 Exposition Universelle. This significant and important piece can be worn as either a pendant or a brooch.
Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you beautifully gift-wrapped in a Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.
