Victorian Antique Micro Mosaic Brooch 'Doves of Pliny' 15ct Rose Gold c1880s

About the Item

This stunning brooch embodies the Victorian Era of the 'Grand Tour' c1880s. It features the ‘Doves of Pliny’ created by micro pieces of coloured glass inlayed into black glass. The setting tests 15ct Rose Gold but is not stamped. The piece is secured by a hinged stickpin and C clasp. Both are in good working order and the stickpin is slightly bent from previous wear. This brooch is in fine antique condition with only moderate signs of wear. It measures approximately 4.9cms in length and weighs approximately 18.4 grams. The Doves of Pliny are the Capitoline Doves from a Roman floor mosaic that was built in the 2nd Century and discovered in 1735 at Hadrian's Villa. They are typical of the micromosaics made in Rome in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They were intended for visitors to Italy who wished to bring home a souvenir of their visit to the country whose ancient civilization continued to inspire the rest of Europe and America. We also have a pair of micro mosaic earrings in store (pictured). Please note that these are being sold separately and not included in this sale.

  • Antique 10ct Rose Gold Alexandrite Dormeuse Earrings Circa 1920s Valued $3150
    Located in Mona Vale, NSW
Very Unique Antique Earrings and a True Rarity These Circa 1920s earrings are set with synthetic Corundum ‘imitating Alexandrite’ and colourless paste. The 1920s places them very early in the era of ‘colour-change’ creation (please continue reading to learn about their history). They are crafted in 10ct Rose Gold and they are unusual because the clips open at the front of the setting. These settings are typical of the 1920s and called ‘Dormeuse’, or sleeper in the French language. The style was constructed with a back-to-front ear wire so that they can be worn by day and are comfortable when asleep. They were popular in the mid 19th to earlier 20th centuries. Quick History of ‘Corundum Imitating Alexandrite’ Alexandrite is a ‘colour change’ gemstone...

  • Natural 38ct Carat Solid Australian Precious Opal Diamond Pendant 14ct Gold
    Located in Mona Vale, NSW
Words cannot describe this stunning pendant. It features a massive, solid Australian Opal mined in Queensland. The Opal displays play of colours red, blue and green with red flashes from both the front and back of the stone. This is a 'shy' Opal though, so it needs light to display its full beauty. The Opal measures approx 4.5cm x 2.3cms and is set in 14ct Yellow Gold with a Natural Diamond at the base of the bale. The Diamond is very good quality and graded colour G and clarity SI2 by the appraiser. It weighs approximately .07ct. The bale is large so it can accommodate a very thick chain as depicted in the photos. Please note: the chain is NOT included in this sale and is for display purposes only. The pendant comes with an Australian Valuation Certificate with a Retail Replacement Value of A$13,490. You will not find another Solid Opal Pendant...
