Victorian Diamond Serpent Brooch

About the Item

A Victorian diamond serpent brooch, the serpent curled in a figure-of-eight design, the head, the body and snout encrusted with old brilliant-cut diamonds, estimated to weigh a total of 2.7 carats, all diamonds set in silver to a yellow gold mount and brooch fitting, two cabochon-cut ruby eyes rubover-set to a yellow gold mount, circa 1850, measures approximately 3.7x2.0cm, gross weight 7.0 grams. A Victorian brooch in very good condition with a later added roller catch. Unmarked, tested as 18ct gold and silver. This lovely brooch comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. In 1840, Prince Albert had an engagement ring in the shape of a snake made for his soon-to-be wife, Queen Victoria. This brooch, from 10 years after this famous royal wedding, features the snake motif which became very popular in symbolising everlasting love and fidelity. This romantic piece would look stunning on a silk scarf, blouse, or lapel, and catches the light beautifully. Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.
