Victorian Diamond and Silver Upon Gold Two Row Crescent Brooch, Circa 1890

About the Item

A Victorian diamond crescent brooch, with two rows of old-cut diamonds, graduating from the centre, spaced with tiny diamonds, in grain settings, with rose-cut diamonds at the ends, with a flat edge on the inside and crown claw settings on the outside curve, mounted in silver-upon-gold, circa 1890. The estimated total diamond weight is 7.00 carats. In Victorian symbolism the crescent or new moon represented a new relationship, hopeful it will "wax" into matrimony.

Antique Victorian Diamond Brooch Crescent 14K Gold - c.1890
Located in London, GB
We are delighted to offer this stunning antique Victorian diamond brooch made c.1890. The brooch is made from solid 14ct gold and in spectacular Victorian fashion. Featuring a crescent design, profusely decorated with fine old cut diamond of tapering sizes on a silver faced mount, the brooch is most certainly an attractive and distinguished in design. Celestial jewellery was increasingly vogue during the Victorian era as renewed fascination of stars & heavens carried into fashion and goldsmithing. The crescent moon was a symbol of the Greek God Selene, representing of a feminine empowerment and change just like the phases of the moon. In addition to such symbolism, insect designs also offer the perfect opportunity to display high level goldsmithing, with intricate and fine gold/silver mounts, curves and angles to ensure the diamonds dazzle in their finest light. Owing to its silver front, the diamonds and its mount have a uniform chic appearance; lively and stylish yet not too ostentatious. This brooch most certainly makes for a distinguished and discerning choice to wear with a variety of clothing. The reverse side of the brooch has a pin which allows it to be worn with jumpers, jackets or coats. The brooch is unmarked as is common with articles of this period and as such we have tested it for gold indicating 14ct gold. Not only would this piece make for an excellent collectable/display but also serves as a wonder piece of antique Victorian celestial...
