Victorian Micromosaic 14K Gold Brooch Depicting a King Charles Spaniel circa 1870
Delightful micromosaic brooch set in a gold frame. The fine inlaid work of colored glass mosaic on a black onyx depicting a lying dog, a little King Charles Spaniel. This motif was designed by the Roman artist Antonio Aguatti and was quite popular in the 19th century. The 14-carat gold frame securely encloses the fine mosaic, the original long pin on the back closes securely with a C-hook.

Good condition, only minimal signs of wear. The mosaic is undamaged and beautifully preserved.
Micromosaics from Rome and Florence, mostly with colorful flower motifs, were popular souvenirs on the "Grand Tour" throughout the 19th century. They were often artfully set and made into enchanting pieces of jewelry back home.
Our pretty spaniel is a historical collector's item from the second half of the 19th century and is still a delightful companion today, not only for dog lovers.
