About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian Scottish, 18 karat yellow gold 'pebble' brooch with Edinburgh interest; part of our antique jewelry and estate jewelry collections This impressive antique Victorian hardstone brooch has been crafted in 18k yellow gold. The oval 18k yellow gold frame displays a feature three-dimensional representation of the mercat cross in Edinburgh*. The plain outer border of the brooch is accented with six paired chalcedony plaques (carnelian, heliotrope/bloodstone and mottled jasper) displayed alternately between chased decorated thistle motifs. The antique Scottish brooch secures to the reverse with a hinged pin and hook fastening. This impressive example of Scottish 'pebble jewellery' is clearly hallmarked to the reverse with the maker's mark (R.L.C). This antique Scottish brooch has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 18k gold. *NOTE: The Edinburgh mercat cross (market cross) depicted was built in 1885. The octagonal drum shaped base supports an octagonal shaft surmounted by a unicorn carrying the saltire pennant. The structure provided a platform for proclamations. Images do not always reflect the true color and brilliance of gemstones and diamonds. The video however provides a truer representation of the actual color and showcases each stone. Condition This antique brooch is fine quality, set with natural chalcedonies. The engraved decoration is sharp and crisp. The brooch is a very good gauge of gold and is in exceptional condition with clear hallmarks.
