Edwardian 14k Essex Crystal Hunting Dog & Fox Cufflinks

About the Item

Reverse carved crystal was a technique created by cutting pieces of rock quartz crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then hand painted. From the front, the image appears to be almost three dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork, but animals were some of the most common motifs. A gorgeous pair of reverse carved crystal cufflinks from the Edwardiab (ca1910) era! Each 14k yellow gold piece adorns a 3D hand painted image of a dog and fox on each cufflink to depict a hunting scene within the rock crystal pieces. The bezel set essex crystal cabochons rest in a rounded frame with a closed back stamped with "14k” along with other maker's marks. A simple chain link rests across the back of each pair of bezel-set crystals. A very unique and attractive pair of cufflinks, they would look wonderful worn by a man or woman! Measurements: Each rock crystal cufflink face measures approximately 11/16" long, about 1/2" wide, and 1/4" thick. The connector chain on the back measure about 3/4" long. Condition: The overall condition of the cufflink set is good. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the rock crystals or to the gold settings and the painted images remain in excellent condition.

Cufflinks English Victorian Essex Crystal
Located in Southbury, CT
Carved crystal cabochons are painted on the reverse to portray two little black and white terriers. Perhaps the only thing more wonderful in the world than a pair of carved crystal cufflinks from England depicting man's best friend is a pair of carved crystal cufflinks from England depicting man's best friend in a beastly mood. Which is why I laugh every time I look at these cufflinks. From a distance, they're quite sophisticated. Perfectly appropriate for a weekend at Balmoral, should you ever receive an invitation. Only upon closer inspection can you see the tiny little frowns on each dog's face. In addition, the eyes look wide open in shock or alarm, as if the food bowl has inexplicably levitated from the floor and is now hovering above the refrigerator, entirely out of reach. The crystals have a diameter of approximately 15.66 mm and the gold toggles 25.64 mm long by 5.96 mm at their widest point, so these cufflinks should fit a range of different-sized holes. I live with three dogs myself so I am admittedly biased, but these antique English cufflinks are, I think, maybe the greatest pair of cufflinks ever created. They even come in their original box. Made near 1860, the cufflinks are hallmarked "WJH." The 18K metal fineness mark and other assay marks are less legible. The fact that these cufflinks have remained with their original and quite clever (you'll see when you remove the 'links) case is surely one of the reasons they are in such fine condition. I have passed on so many pairs of canine and equestrian-themed Essex crystal...
