Nicholas I Romanov Eagle Cufflinks by Marie Betteley

About the Item

Nicholas I Romanov eagle cufflinks in gilded silver, each depicting Russian imperial eagle with downturned wings below a single Romanov crown in the Neoclassical version made famous by Tsar Nicholas I (1825-55). Based on a European 19th century cufflink design, each top link features rounded corners and beveled borders. These are attached by a fixed curved section to smaller oval back links that flip down to slip easily into the cuff. Designed by Marie Betteley, 2006. Top links measure 3/4 in. x 1/2 in. (1.9 x 1.3 cm.). Distance between top and back link: .6 in. (1.5 cm.) These cufflinks are also available in 18k yellow gold for $2200, Ref no. GJNFD048YG. The bicephalous eagle’s origins can be traced back to the beginning of Civilisation itself, in Sumer some five millennia past. With its heads facing both west and east, the mythological raptor came to symbolise universal rule for a number of ancient realms, including the Hittites, the Seljuk Turks, the Holy Roman Empire and Byzantium. Ivan III, the first Muscovite ruler to claim the imperial title of tsar, adopted Eastern Rome’s arms around 1500 AD, after the fall of Constantinople to the Turks. As emblem of an increasingly vast and powerful empire, Russia’s double-headed aagle evolved over the centuries and took several forms during the reign of Nicholas I (1825-55). This neoclassical rendition influenced by Europe's prevailing Empire style proved the most popular.
