About the Item

In these fascinating earrings are mounted two authentic Roman coins, which represent the Emperor Septimius Severus and his wife Julia Domna. The design, typically from the Roman era, is even more interesting due to the presence of 6 beautiful Baroque pearls. In the reverse side of Septimius Severus coin there is the " Annona" , a Roman divinity of grain supply to the city of Rome. In the reverse side of Julia Domna coins there is Goddess Vesta that, in Roman religion, was the goddess of the hearth, identified with the Greek Hestia. The lack of an easy source of fire in the early Roman community placed a special premium on the ever-burning hearth fire, both publicly and privately maintained; thus, from the earliest times Vesta was assured of a prominent place in both family and state worship. Lucius Septimius Severus was Roman emperor from April 193 to February 211 CE. He was of Libyan descent from Leptis Magna and came from a locally prominent Punic family who had a history of rising to senatorial as well as consular status His first visit to Rome was around 163 CE during the reign of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. He was protected by his cousin Caius Septimius Severus and entered the Roman Senate in 170 CE. When his cousin went to Africa as a proconsul around 173-174 CE, he chose L. Septimius Severus to be his legatus. When he was governor of Gaul and he lived in Lugdunum (Lyon), he married Julia Domna from Emesa (Syria) around 187 CE. She was descended from a family of great priests of Eliogabal. Julia Domna (c. 160 – 217 AD) was Roman empress consort from 193 to 211. She was born in Emesa in Roman Syria to an Arab family of priests of the deity Elagabalus. In 187, she married Libyan-born Septimius Severus, who at the time was governor of the Roman province of Gallia Lugdunensis. They had two sons, Caracalla and Geta. A civil war over the Roman throne broke out in 193, and shortly afterwards Severus declared himself emperor. The war ended in 197 with the defeat of the last of Severus's opponents. As empress, Domna was famous for her political, social, and philosophical influence. She received titles such as "Mother of the Invincible Camps". The custom of encrusting coins to create jewelry is extremely ancient; its origins are to be found in the Greek world and the most widespread was in Rome between the first and third centuries AD. The Romans attributed a talismanic and amuletic power to the jewels thus made, giving the coin a much more complex task than that for which it was minted. All of our jewels are certified by certificate of authenticity attesting their Greek or Roman origin !
