1940s Eisenberg Silver Rhodium Plated Bow Earrings belonging to Vivien Leigh

About the Item

A pair of 1940s silver rhodium plated 'Marie Antoinette' bow earrings by Eisenberg, with an intriguing provenance. Eisenberg & Sons were one of the most highly regarded costume jewellery designers of the 1930s and '40s. I am listing these earrings, despite the fact that a few of the crystals are missing (see photographs), because they are so very pretty when on and have a fascinating back story. They belonged to the actress and film star Vivien Leigh. Whilst making 'Anna Karenina' for Hungarian-born film producer Alexander Korda, who was a close friend of my mother, she wore these earrings to rehearse a ballroom scene. They fell off her ears whilst she was dancing, crashing to the floor, hence the missing stones. Miss Leigh told her maid to throw them away, but my mother asked if she might have them as a memento. Eisenberg was renowned for its superior craftsmanship, attention to detail and its use of Swarovski crystals and coloured stones. These earrings are miniature works of art, designed in the 18th Century-Style for which the company was famous. Indeed, this particular design was called 'Marie Antoinette's Bows' after the French queen. At 2.7 Inches long and 2.5 Inches wide, they consist of silver rhodium plated double bows, one above the other (an amazing piece of metal work) with ribbons that fan out sideways at the bottom as though blown by a breeze. Onto the bows are are set diamond-cut Austrian crystals, and two central brilliants with wonderful hues that catch the light beautifully. The earrings clip on. (They have been tightened since they fell of Miss Leigh's ears). They are in excellent condition apart from the missing crystals, which could be replaced, but the earrings would lose some of their romance. They are being sold as is.
