ArtDeco 5BlackDiamond-FacetedSpinels 6BezelSetCognacDiamonds CastSilver Earrings

About the Item

Featuring five sparkly black opaque spinels with diamond-shaped facets and splintery vitreous surfaces, along with bezel-set champagne diamonds with yellow or peach reflections in sunlight, these unsigned mid-century Buccellati-style burnished-silver relatively-heavy clip earrings were most likely handcrafted by an artisan before U.S-copyright protection began in 1955. To achieve the textural and reflective intricacies that are appreciated on close inspection, they used casting, finishing tools and wire. Notably, by the early 1950s, brown diamonds were increasingly used in jewelry after gem importers introduced them in colors of "champagne" and "cognac", which are the adjectives most often used for them today. Between the crystals, six round faceted brown diamonds are bezel set in silver for alternate white and grey reflections in a five-point concave shape, which recalls a starfish when viewed from the back. Unlike the smooth round bezels on each point, the sole centered fluted bezel has a wide base--also in a five-point organic shape--whose fine hand-engraved texture twists as the circumference diminishes towards the top. Although there are some tiny chips and rough edges on a few of the many spinel facets, they are only visible with a loop and can be rotated out of view since the crystals are actually tightly wired beads for nearly 360-degrees of sparkle between the silver points. While in a monochrome and geometric Art Deco style, the earrings could date no earlier than the 1930s given the clip style. The use of black spinels mixed with dark diamonds became fashionable as The Great Depression diminished and a wider variety of imported gems were used in jewelry, such as by the late internationally renowned Fulco di Verdura who also created pieces featuring diamond-faceted spinels.

  • Schreiner 1950s 22 RuffleProngSetCrystals PaleYellow AuroraBorealis ClipEarrings
    By Henry Schreiner
    Located in Chicago, IL
In 1956 when Christian Dior's ultra-feminine New Look had dominated fashion for nearly a decade, Schreiner New York handcrafted these opulent unsigned earrings with 22 prong-set open-back crystals to accompany the evening-wear of an American high-end fashion designer. They may have been for client Pauline Trigere when her ready-to-wear collections with accessories including unmarked-Schreiner jewelry were sold by NYC's Bergdorf Goodman and worn by her clients including Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Elizabeth Taylor. Comparatively, Schreiner jewelry produced in the 1950s for direct sale to high-end department stores, such as Neiman Marcus, Henri Bendel and Saks Fifth Avenue, were the only pieces to include a brand signature. Using the best quality European crystals that were custom-made for him, the founder Henry Schreiner was among the world's leading glass-jewelry designers before he died in 1954, whereafter his daughter and her husband continued with their handcrafted production. The family shared this distinction with Western Germany-based Max Muller and Paris-based Roger Jean Pierre, who were commissioned to create haute-couture pieces for the world's leading fashion houses. Notably in 1949, Henry Schreiner was commissioned by Dior to create several exclusive pieces. We know these earrings were not created earlier than 1956 because of the use of iridescent coating on some of the crystals that produces a rainbow effect. Known as aurora-borealis (AB) stones, Swarovski initially produced them exclusively for a haute-couture collection that year by Dior. Shortly thereafter, the Schreiner team had access to such colorful stones, and most certainly used them as soon as possible to enable their American fashion-designer clients to compete with the new Dior iridescent-colors trend. As Schreiner introduced its "ruffle" settings in 1957, we can see that they evolved from a smaller ruffle the year prior that is present on the tips of the marquise-shaped pale yellow stones...
