Taxco Silver, Chiapas Yellow Amber Cabochon Clip Earrings, Marked

About the Item

Pair of Chiapas yellow amber cabochon inlayed Taxco silver earrings with silver ball halo detail. 925 Mexican silver. One earring is marked “MEX TT-47 MEX” The second is marked “MEX TT-47 925”. The first letter, T, is the city letter for Taxco. The second letter refers to the makers last name. The number after the dash means that this maker is the 47th silversmith to use the initial T for their last name. This numbering system began in 1979 and has continued to the present. Chiapas amber comes from the mines in Chiapas Mexico. It is a younger amber but one of its most noted characteristics is that it is a harder amber and is easier to work with. It also shows characteristic black inclusions. This is one of the most beautiful pairs of earrings of this type that I have found. It is handmade by a silversmith, so naturally it will be slightly imperfect. That being said, this is one of the more detailed pairs that I have seen. The silver has a high-polished finish but the inner parts if the halo have been intentionally oxidation applied in order to accentuate the halo’s lovely formed silver ball circle. There are notable scratches on the back of this vintage pair but the front is still quite stunning. Care Recommendation: To keep your Mexican silver from tarnishing, clean and store carefully. Use a polishing cloth. (Don’t use silver cleaning solutions on it; it may damage the amber.) Store it in a sealed plastic bag to prevent air or moisture damage. Please keep away from extreme temperatures, moisture, perfumes, natural skin oils, and harsh chemicals (Source: Home and Away Gallery Website) Please feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about color or condition =) Rachel

  • Margot de Taxco Silver Confetti Enamel Peony Flower 1950s Clip On Earrings
    By Margot De Taxco
    Located in North Attleboro, MA
Gorgeous wearable art by renowned jewelry designer Margot de Taxco. Elegant and fun all at once, these earrings are sterling silver peonies with champlevé white enamel and gold "confetti" flecks throughout. There's a lot of detail to the flowers including dimensional petals and center stamens made of tiny silver dollops. Both pieces marked 925, Hecho En Mexico, Eagle 16 (Margot's personal Eagle Assay stamp). Each measure 1.5"L x 1"W. Very good condition with patina and minor wear from age and use. No enamel loss. Some crazing visible when magnified. About Margot de Taxco: Margot Van Voorhies was born in 1896 in San Francisco, California. In 1937, forty-one-year-old divorcée Margot Van Voorhies left San Francisco on a trip to Mexico City. Fate threw her into the path of Don Antonio Castillo, who took her to Taxco, a Mexican hotbed for the design, crafting, and production of silver objects, in particular jewelry and housewares. Castillo and Margot married. At the time, Castillo was working for William Spratling, a pioneer in Mexican silversmithing. He brought Margot into the business as a designer, helping her to transform her paper creations into three-dimensional forms in silver. In 1939, the pair, along with other members of Castillo’s family, opened shop as Los Castillo Taller (Taller is Spanish for “Workshop”), with Margot as the top designer. After ten years, the marriage between Castillo and Van Voorhies dissolved, as did their professional association. Margot went on to open her own shop in 1948, taking the name Margot de Taxco, by which she is best known today. At the peak of her career, Margot, who designed each piece herself, had two dozen silversmiths and a dozen enamellists in her employ to execute her vision. Margot attracted talented craftsmen who later went on to cement their own reputations, such as Sigi Pineda, Miguel Melendez...
