William Spratling Amethyst Spiral Conch Sea Shell Silver Earrings Vintage, 1950s

About the Item

From the collection of Phyllis M. Goddard, widely respected collector, researcher and author of books on William Spratling's works. She featured these earrings in her book "Spratling Silver: A Field Guide", 2003, pg. 96, fig. 2-301. These are truly beautiful. Each earring is a whimsical spiraled sea shell with an angled swirl of silver and cone-shaped amethyst cabochons. The level of detail is wonderful, from the slightly angled tips to the concave backs that comfortably fit the shape of the ear lobe. If mermaids wore earrings, these would be them! Circa 1951; Third Design Period. One earring stamped with WS scripted initials and 925. The other is stamped with Spratling's Eagle 30 assay. Each measures approx. 1 3/4" long x 5/8" wide. Non-pierced screw backs. Provenance: from the collection of Phyllis M. Goddard. Very good condition; normal wear and surface scratches commensurate with age and use. Amethyst have natural inclusions as is typical for Spratling's works. Please see photos for condition details.

  • Margot de Taxco Silver Confetti Enamel Peony Flower 1950s Clip On Earrings
    By Margot De Taxco
    Located in North Attleboro, MA
Gorgeous wearable art by renowned jewelry designer Margot de Taxco. Elegant and fun all at once, these earrings are sterling silver peonies with champlevé white enamel and gold "confetti" flecks throughout. There's a lot of detail to the flowers including dimensional petals and center stamens made of tiny silver dollops. Both pieces marked 925, Hecho En Mexico, Eagle 16 (Margot's personal Eagle Assay stamp). Each measure 1.5"L x 1"W. Very good condition with patina and minor wear from age and use. No enamel loss. Some crazing visible when magnified. About Margot de Taxco: Margot Van Voorhies was born in 1896 in San Francisco, California. In 1937, forty-one-year-old divorcée Margot Van Voorhies left San Francisco on a trip to Mexico City. Fate threw her into the path of Don Antonio Castillo, who took her to Taxco, a Mexican hotbed for the design, crafting, and production of silver objects, in particular jewelry and housewares. Castillo and Margot married. At the time, Castillo was working for William Spratling, a pioneer in Mexican silversmithing. He brought Margot into the business as a designer, helping her to transform her paper creations into three-dimensional forms in silver. In 1939, the pair, along with other members of Castillo’s family, opened shop as Los Castillo Taller (Taller is Spanish for “Workshop”), with Margot as the top designer. After ten years, the marriage between Castillo and Van Voorhies dissolved, as did their professional association. Margot went on to open her own shop in 1948, taking the name Margot de Taxco, by which she is best known today. At the peak of her career, Margot, who designed each piece herself, had two dozen silversmiths and a dozen enamellists in her employ to execute her vision. Margot attracted talented craftsmen who later went on to cement their own reputations, such as Sigi Pineda, Miguel Melendez...
