Antique Fleurs de Lys Dangle Drop earrings Vulcanite Gutta Percha Glas Metall
About the Item
These unusual earrings in the shape of Fleur de Lys were made out of vulcanite, also known as gutta percha, in 1870 ca. Vulcanite is a material derived from rubber and was much in use from 1865 onwards, shortly after Goodyear claimed his patent for rubber. The hooks are made from base metal and secured to black glas beads.
The fleur de lys is associated with the French Kings since Clovis I. in the sixth century. Under Napoleon the fleur de lys was used upside down an represented a bee. The earrings are in their original condition and have not been cleaned, if they were to be brushed and treated gently with a spot of oil they would become darker. If so wished I will clean the earrings..
