Edwardian Carved Jet, Diamond and Natural Coral Earrings

About the Item

Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There is generally two recognized types: soft and hard jet. It is believed that the soft jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of jet. As a result, the jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning. An exquisite pair of carved jet and coral earrings from the Edwardian (ca1910) era! Crafted in 14kt yellow gold topped with platinum, these stunning and very unusual earrings each display a front-facing carved jet hoop which encircles a single natural coral bead at the center. The rich, black graduated hoop features a lovely textured surface, similar to a leafy wreath, and decorating the base is a platinum "X" shaped accent lined with Rose Cut diamonds. The relatively large natural coral bead hanging at the center has a smoothly polished surface and exhibits a vibrant undyed natural orange hue. A gorgeous diamond lined tulip-shaped cap rests at the top, allowing the bead to freely dangle, adding lovely movement to the design. Additionally, the hoop is capped at the top with an ornate diamond encrusted design, with each facet catching the light beautifully with every turn. Finishing the piece is a delicate carved jet topper embellished with a single bezel set diamond at the center. All of the platinum topped accents feature fine milgrain detail throughout, providing a wonderful feminine touch. The earrings hang from a simple yellow gold wire at the top, allowing them to swing with lovely movement and frame the face beautifully. The combination of the jet, vibrant coral, and sparkling diamonds is simply stunning, and the earrings would make an incredible statement piece when worn! Each earring hangs approximately 1 1/2" long, measures about 3/4" thick, and is 3/8" thick.

Condition:
The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the platinum and gold setting or to the carved jet and coral beads. The diamonds are intact and securely set. The earring wires are secure.
