A Pair Of Archaeological Revival Lapis And Gold Earrings
About the Item
A pair of Archaeological Revival lapis and gold drop earrings, each earring with a realistically carved ram’s head, suspending a spherical lapis bead at the top with a conical gold cap of fluted design and at the bottom bearing a gold anthemion motif, all made in yellow gold with wire fittings, circa 1860, measuring approximately 5.8 x 1.8cm, gross weight 29.1 grams.
This pair of earrings are in very good condition. Unmarked, tested as 18ct gold.
These classical Victorian earrings come from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. In the mid-19th century, there was a renewed interest in archaeological findings from Egypt, Greece, and Italy. This craze for antiquities took many forms, and jewellery in the styles of ancient artifacts became popular. These wonderful earrings, made in around 1860, feature a realistically carved ram’s head. The ram’s nose is pierced through with a ring, from which is suspended a lovely midnight blue ball of lapis lazuli. Lapis lazuli was greatly prized by the people of the Ancient world, making it a fitting stone for these revivalist earrings. Eye-catching and exotic, these earrings are a perfect example of mid-Victorian revivalist style.
Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.
