Judith Ripka has a unique flair for harkening back to historical periods that produced exquisite jewelry. She writes, “Designing jewelry is an innate part of who I am. I have always known that I would be a jewelry designer and have always had an organic eye for design and color interpretation. My earliest memories are of playing in my mother’s jewelry box and accessorizing my clothing.” Indeed her mother inspired her to find new and innovative ways to wear old jewelry and revive styles from the past with her fresh twist. These Judith Ripka Mid-Century Revival Diamond Button Earrings, made circa the late 20th Century, pay homage to classic and feminine gold jewelry of the fabulous and affluent 1950s. They also sparkle with that characteristic optimism. Crafted in 18K yellow gold, the earrings bring the texture of the period, albeit in a more architectonic style. The pair, designed for pierced ears, feature fluting in the gold at the top and bottom in an expansive and rounded manner that gives the illusion of continuing beyond the borders into a demi hoop. However, examining the back confirms what the eye cannot conclude from the volumetric and well-sculpted, domed fronts: these are perfectly flat button earrings. The earrings are each pavé-set with five rows of round brilliant-cut diamonds, the most prominent stones positioned at the center and tapering towards the edges to emphasize the rounded, almost bombé look. The 32 graduated diamonds have an estimated total weight of 3.15 carats, most with F-G color and VS clarity. The excellent, near-colorless stones sparkle with a brilliance punctuated by so many button prongs. Excess prongs just above and below the rocks continue the texture joyously. The right and left borders are likewise dotted—like the button prongs but slightly larger—descending in single vertical rows. Judith Ripka founded her eponymous jewelry brand in 1977 in New York and was known for impeccable craftsmanship, timeless allure, and luxurious material. After she expanded her company to include 16 retail stores, Ripka sold the business in 2014 to Xcel Brands—owners of other iconic New York brands, Halston and Isaac Mizrahi—and they still produce her line today. Each earring measures approx. 0.63” x 0.63”; for pierced ears outfitted with posts and hinged omega backs. Diamond weight approx. 3.15 carats, estimated F-G colors, VS clarity. Overall weight approx. 15.20 grams, made in 18k yellow gold. The earrings have a loop where drops could be added (not included in the lot). Signed JR with maker’s mark and 750 stamps; in excellent condition - circa late 20th Century.

One of the first jewelers to harness the potential of television, Judith Ripka has built a following for her bold work through her frequent appearances on the televised shopping channel QVC. Her earrings, necklaces and other accessories often feature matte gold and large colored precious gemstones highlighted with a dazzle of diamonds — statement pieces that can be worn every day for a touch of glamour.

The New York–born daughter of a couturier, Ripka studied art at Hunter College and the Parsons School of Design before founding her brand in 1977 with an 18-karat gold collection. She started simple, selling the pieces in her living room, leading to the opening of her first store in Manhasset, New York. Early on, Ripka recognized the power of advertising, taking out an ad in the New York Times that read, “Give your pearls a little culture,” and invited customers to bring in their old pearl necklaces and “see them transformed into a beautiful new necklace.” The updating of traditional styles that might be reserved only for special occasions into modern pieces for daily wear would become a touchstone of Ripka’s brand. By 1982, the jeweler was the proud recipient of the De Beers Award for Outstanding Jewelry Design.

After her QVC debut in 1997, Ripka’s jewelry company took off. A pioneer in selling luxury goods on television, she later appeared on the Shopping Channel, with Ripka herself as an engaging personality helping to drive the sales and popularity of her jewelry. Xcel Brands acquired her company in 2014 with the designs continuing to have an active presence on QVC.

Alongside her QVC-marketed jewelry, Ripka has designed custom pieces, such as the diamond, sapphire and ruby 18-karat gold brooch that Hillary Clinton wore at the 1997 inauguration for her husband, Bill Clinton. Talk-show host, author and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey has regularly sported her Eclipse earrings, which incorporate two tiers of precious stones, a design that can easily match outfits from day to night.

Other Ripka designs have brought high-end luxury to the masses, such as a 2010 line launched on QVC showcasing the designer’s take on famous jewels in the Smithsonian Institution. At every price point, Ripka’s jewelry has maintained its fine quality in the fresh interpretations of classic styles.

The Ripka brand continues to innovate its offerings, including branching into creative partnerships, such as a 2020 capsule collection with Italian architect Elena Manferdini as part of a series of collaborations with women artists and designers.
