Opal - Pear Shape - approx 6.80ct - Incredible Play of Color!
About the Item
A very beautiful Opal with lots of Life and Play of Color as can be seen in the photos and the video. Weighs approx 6.80ct - the actual weight will vary a bit depending on whether it has been exposed to water as it is hydrophillic (water loving) and will absorb water from fingerprints, washing one's hands, from the atmosphere if humid, etc. This particular variety may go transparent if placed into water and then after a few hours or a day or so, will return to the original body color - and while more transparent, it will still display flashes of color!
This piece was photographed under various light conditions. The photo with the bluish body color, the Opal was sitting on a dark surface under a different light source than the other photos. Body color as well as all the various colors that this Opal displays is dependent on the light and wavelengths available - which is the typical case not only for gemstones in general, but how light, physics and perception works in general with respect to color.
The Photos and Video (with the exception of the one with the bluish body color) was shot under low light levels, so you can see how the Opal picks up the light and displays the wonderful Play of Color that Opals are known for - and the color and pattern will change depending not only on the lights, wavelengths but also on the angle the light enters as well as the viewers angle.
The sister gem to this was an oval that was sold to a well known Designer/Studio that works with Tiffany. The price per carat on this Opal is actually less per carat than what was paid for the oval...

Unique Cut & Color!Located in Methuen, MAIn keeping with All That Glitters' Unique and Rare Gems, here is a gemstone that most people are familiar with but don't know that it can come in various other colors (purple, teal, green, yellow, gold, pink and colors in between). The mineral is Zoisite and when it is a Blue Purple or Purple Blue, it is called Tanzanite. This ia a Green Zoisite; some call this Green Tanzanite or simply Fancy Tanzanite. Most Tanzanite comes out of the ground as a brown color and is heated to obtain the blue/purple; however, some is apparently heated natural in the ground and we have purchased the rough in various colors. Because this body color is Green, this would not have been heated. Zoisite/Tanzanite is trichroic and as the rough or gemstone is turned to look at all three axes, different colors can be obversed. You can see purple in some directions as this piece is viewed from the side. This interesting freeform weighs 4.27cts. This beauty was Faceted in the U.S. by a Multi-Award Winning Cutter who is represented in museums. (Initial owner/cutter was seeking about $8,000 for this unique beauty from the trade, but we have a good rapport with this cutter and we can offer this to the public at about his original price.)
