About the Item
This 1997 Gold Proof Sovereign, struck in 22 carat gold to the finest proof quality, was issued by the Royal Mint with a limited mintage of just 7,500 individually boxed coins. An additional 2,250 were released as part of multi-coin sets, making this a highly collectible modern sovereign.
The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic design of St George slaying the dragon — a motif celebrated for over 200 years in British coinage. The obverse bears Raphael Maklouf’s elegant portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
This issue holds additional appeal as it commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Queen’s wedding anniversary £5 coin release year and is one of the final sovereigns to feature Maklouf’s portrait.
