Antique Early Victorian Agate and 18kt Gold Ornate Seal Fob
About the Item
For many centuries, French symbolism and sentiment mixed with English tradition. Look immediately to the photograph of the intaglio bottom of this seal. Winged Eros is rowing a small vessel on a rolling sea. Is the sea the sea of love, the rolling waves of a relationship or a sea of tears? In the bow of his boat is a heart. The words "Lay Mon Desir" are inscribed above the image, clearly. This is a "passionate lament"; or "cry of my desire".
The agate stone is delicious and unusual. It shows well in one of the following photographs. The colors are marbled tones of ochre, charcoal gray and umber.
A small chip exists on one side of the agate that is very difficult to detect. It is like part of the marbled stone. There is no affect to the appearance and the stone is absolutely tight and stabile. This is a rare specimen of an intaglio and one of our favorite.
