About the Item

Nineteen tapered agate barrel beads alternating with collared 22k gold beads made of granules stacked in five rings of increasing and decreasing size to form biconical granulated beads. Gold beading tips are composed of rings of grains to which is attached a circlet of flattened wire, linked to the hook and eye clasp. The agate beads are ancient, from the Bronze Age. The beads with large drill holes (3 mm) are the earliest and were made about four thousand years ago. Beads with drill holes of 2.0 – 2.6 mm tend to have a rounder profile with the end dimensions being smaller (Nos. 6. 10. & 14.). These are not quite as old but the dating is somewhat uncertain. The dimensions of the beads are as follows (starting from the upper right side in the photograph): 1. Length 1.11 cm, width at center 6mm, width at ends 5mm, hole diameter 2.6mm. 2. Length 1.06 cm, width at center 6.5mm, width at ends 6.5 mm, hole diameter 2.4 mm. Some whitening due to burial in alkaline soil. 3. Length 1.95 cm, width at center 7.4 mm. Width at ends 4.1 mm, hole diameter 2.3 mm. Some end wear and a small nick at one end. 4. Length 1.49 cm, width at center 7.3 mm, width at ends 4.3 mm, hole diameter 2.2mm. 5. Length 1.7 cm, width at center 7.3 mm, width at ends 5 mm, hole diameter 3mm. Some whitening due to burial in alkaline soil. 6. Length 2.19 cm, width at center 7 mm, width at ends 3.2 mm, hole diameter 2 mm. 7. Length 2.2 cm, width at center 7.5 mm, width at ends 5.2 mm, hole diameter 3 mm. 8. Length 2.65 cm, width at center 8 mm, width at ends 5.5 mm, hole diameter 2.3 mm. 9. Length 2.92 cm, width at center 9mm, width at ends 5 mm, hole diameter 3 mm. 10. Length 2.08 cm, width at center 9 mm, width at ends 5 mm, hole diameter 2.6 mm. 11. Length 2.69 cm, width at center 8.3 mm, width at ends 6.1 mm, hole diameter 2.1 mm. 12. Length 3.05 cm, width at center 8.3 mm, width at ends 6.0mm, hole diameter 2mm. 13. Length 2.15 cm, width at center 7.8 mm, width at ends 5.5 mm, hole diameter 4 mm. Some end wear and chipping at the hole on one end. Three cracks extend 6 mm into the bead from one end. 14. Length 2.2 cm, width at center 7.3 mm, width at ends 3.9 mm, hole diameter 2.3 mm. Whitening on one side due to contact with alkaline soil for an extended period of time. 15. Length 1.65 cm, width at center 7.4 mm, width at ends5 mm, hole diameter 3 mm. 16. Length 1.81 cm, width at center 7.2 mm, width at ends 4.5 mm, hole diameter 3 mm. Some end wear and chipping at the hole on one end. 17. Length 1.5 cm, width at center 7 mm, width at ends 5 mm, hole diameter 4 mm. 18. Length 1.38 cm, width at center 6.3 mm, width at ends 5.1 mm, hole diameter 2mm. Some end wear and a shallow chip along one side. 19. Length 1.33 cm, width at center 6 mm, width at ends 4 mm, hole diameter 3.2 mm. There are eighteen gold beads made of five rings of ten granules each made in three different sizes. They are stacked with the largest in the center forming a biconical shape. There are plain wire borders at end ends of the beads. The beading tips are made by using the wire border and the first two rings of grains to make a cup like structure which hides the knot of the string inside it. Two circlets of flattened gold wire are attached to the open ends at the edges. The hook and eye clasp link into this loop. The hook is flattened at the end and rolled up to make a lip upon which there is a row of five granules. The eye portion of the clasp is made from flattened wire and is elongated; the round loop that attaches to the beading tip is rotated ninety degrees from the other half of the eye so that the clasp will lay flat on the neck. The necklace is 21 ½ inches (54.6 cm) in length. The necklace weighs 55.5 grams.
