Ancient Agate Barrel Beads with Red Jasper and Granulated 22k Gold Spacers

About the Item

Fifty-one agate beads alternating with pairs of 22k gold granulated ring spacer beads. Twenty-five of the agate beads are long tapered barrel-shaped beads and twenty-six are small spherical, slightly oblate black beads with a white band. The barrel-shaped and round beads alternate in the necklace and graduate in size towards the back as do the gold spacers. The round agate beads are 3 mm in length and 4 mm in width at the front of the necklace and 2.7 mm in length and 3 mm in width at the very back. The diameter of the drill holes is 1 mm. (1.) The center bead, a dark red jasper is 2.12 cm in length, 5.5mm in width at the center and 4mm in width at the ends. The diameter of the perforation is 2mm. (2.) Moving to the left in the photograph, we see a black agate with gray bands that is 2.6cm in length, 4.9mm in width at the center and 3.2mm in width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1.5mm. The bead has some white patina on one end, the result of the bead having been in contact with alkaline soil which has reacted with the stone. (3.) The next bead back is a carnelian with white banding 1.6cm in length, 5mm in width at the center and 3mm in width at the ends. The hole diameter is 1.9mm. (4.) The following bead is a very long and thin barrel-shaped or tapered agate bead 2.68cm in length, 4.7mm in width at the center and 2.5mm in width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1mm. (5.) A white colored agate bead, the result of a chemical reaction with alkaline soil conditions, still has banding visible. It is 1.13cm in length, 4 mm in width at the center and 3mm in width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 2mm. (6.) Next is a pale brown and clear quartz agate bead, 1.97cm in length, 4mm in width at the center, 2.3mm in width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1.2mm. (7.) Following is a shorter carnelian barrel-shaped bead, 8mm in length, 3.5mm in width at the center, 2.9mm in width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1.5mm. (8.) The next bead is very similar to the preceding one. The bead is 9mm in length, 3.5mm in width at the center and 2mm in width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1mm. (9.) The next bead is a carnelian 1.75 cm in length, 3mm in width at the center, and 2.8mm in width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1mm. (10.) The following bead is a bark brown and clear quartz banded agate, 1cm in length, 2.8mm in width with a very slight taper towards the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1mm. (11.) The next bead is a straight cylinder of carnelian with a slight amount of alkaline reside on one side, 9mm in length, 2.2mm in width and with a drill hole diameter of 1mm. The following bead is a trapezoidal quartz bead with very thin white markings. It is flat on the top and bottom sides; the sides are also planar. It is 5.8mm in length, 3.9mm in width at the center, and with a thickness of 2.8mm. The drill hole diameter is .9mm. (12.) The last bead is a carnelian cylinder 8.5mm in length, 2.5mm in width and with a drill hole of 2mm. The bead has a small chip at the edge of the drill hole, but since it is the last bead in the necklace, it does not affect how the bead hangs. The right side of the necklace commences with at a reddish brown translucent agate bead with clear quartz banding, slightly tapering, 2.24cm in length, 5mm in width at the center and 3.3mm in width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1mm. (2.) Following is a long barrel-shaped bead, about two fifths a translucent light brown color, the remainder being a white quartz, 1.9cm in length, 5mm in width at the center and 3mm in width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1.3mm. (3.) A translucent brown agate barrel-shaped bead with clear quartz banding 2.15cm in length, 4.6mm in with at the center and 3.2mm width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1mm. (4.) A straight cylinder agate tube, white with clear quartz banding and dark bands at the center, has a length of 1.62cm, a width of 3.9mm and a drill hole diameter of 2.2mm. (5.) Following is a long agate bead, slightly tapering, predominately clear quartz, with a light brown band at one end and another towards the center. It is 1.9cm in length, 3.9mm in width at the center and 3mm in width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1mm. (6.) The next bead is a shorter carnelian barre-shaped bead with a white band at the center, 9mm in length, 3.5mm in width at the center and 3mm in width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1mm. (7.) Following is an agate cylindrical bead with quartz banding and one darker end, 1 cm in length, 3.2mm in width and with a drill hole diameter of 1mm. (8.) Next is a barrel-shaped agate bead with carnelian, orange white and gray banding, 8mm in length, 3.9mm in width at the center and 3mm in width at the ends. The drill hole diameter is 1.2mm. (9.) Following is a carnelian cylindrical shaped bead, 1cm in length and 3mm in width. The drill hole diameter is .9mm. (10.) Next is another carnelian cylindrical tube bead, with whitening of the surface by a chemical reaction with the alkaline soil. It is 9mm in length, 2.5mm in width and with a drill hole diameter of 1mm. (11.) Following is a short agate bead, a rectangular solid with planar sides and top, 6mm in length and 3mm in width. The drill hole diameter is 1mm. (12.) the last bead on the left side is a straight cylinder of carnelian, 9mm in length, with a width of 2.6mm and a drill hole diameter of 1mm. The agates in this necklace are small in scale and the barrel-shaped ones are long and thin which gives a delicate and elegant effect. Agate is a hard stone that can be given a beautiful high polish and seems to have been prized for the use that could be made of its lovely natural patterns. These beads are no exception; each has been selected for its beauty and color. The combination of gold, carnelian and agate was particularly popular in ancient Mesopotamia. The necklace is 23 1/8 inches (59 cm) in length. The necklace weighs 23.5 grams.

Wear consistent with age and use. At least two beads in this necklace show whitening of the surface caused by a chemical reaction from burial in alkaline soil. There is also a small chip at the edge of the drill hole on one of the beads, but it does not affect how the bead hangs.
