Ancient Agate Bow Beads, Etched Carnelian Beads, with Lapis Lazuli and 20k Gold

About the Item

Twenty-one agate beads, nine of which are “bow” beads and twelve are round, thirteen small etched carnelian beads and forty-two lapis lazuli beads. Each of the agate beads are faced with granulated 20k gold ring beads. There are forty-two of these. Each of the etched carnelian beads are faced with round lapis lazuli beads. These two modules alternate. There are four small tabular carnelian beads at the back of the necklace. There are four small carnelian beads, triangular solids of four sides with each of the same facing pairs opposed. The center bead is 1.85 cm in length, 9 mm in width at the center, 3.2 mm wide at the ends and 4.3 mm in thickness at the center. The drill hole diameter is 2.1 mm. Of the second set of bow beads, the longer is 2.16 cm in length, 8.2 mm in width at the center, 3 mm wide at the end and 3.3 mm in thickness. The drill hole diameter is 1.8 mm. The opposite bead is 1.9 cm in length, 8.7 mm wide at the center, and 3.8 mm wide at the ends. It is 4 mm in thickness and the drill hole diameter is 1.5 mm. Of the next set back, the third, the longer is 1.83 cm in length, 7.5 mm in width at the center, 3.1 mm wide at the ends and 3.3 mm in thickness. The drill hole diameter is 1.2 mm. Its opposite is 1.52cm in length, 7 mm in width at the center, 3 mm in width at the ends and 3.1 mm in thickness. The drill hole diameter is 1.6 mm. In the fourth set of bow beads to the back, the longest is 1.83 cm in length. The width at the center is 8.2 mm and the width at the ends is 3 mm. The thickness measures 3.5 mm, and the drill hole diameter is 1.2 mm. Its opposite is 1.71 cm in length, 7.6 mm in width at the center, 3.2 mm wide at the ends and 3.4 mm in thickness. The drill hole diameter is 1.8 mm. Of the last set, the longer is 1.85 cm in length, 6.8 mm in width at the center, 3 mm in width at the ends, and 3.1 mm in thickness. The drill hole diameter is 1 mm. Its opposite is 1.8 cm in length, 7.6 mm in width at the center, 3 mm in width at the ends, and having a thickness of 3.8 mm. The drill hole diameter is 2 mm. Ten of the round agate beads are 5.8 mm – 6 mm in width and 5 mm – 6 mm in length. There are a pair of very small agate beads at the back of the necklace, just 3 mm – 3.5 mm in length and 3.5mm in width. The etched carnelian beads are short cylinders 3.5 mm in length and 4 mm in width. The drill hole diameters are 1 mm. They are encircled by a white zigzag line. The lapis lazuli beads are similar in size, spherical, 3 mm – 4 mm in diameter, decreasing in size to the back of the necklace with drill hole diameters of 1 mm. The small tabular carnelian beads are 3.5 mm – 4 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness. The drill hole diameters are 1 mm. These beads originate from the Swat Valley in what is now present-day northern Pakistan, between the Indus River and the Karakoram Mountain range to the north. They were most likely made about two thousand years ago. The granulated gold ring beads, beading tips, and the hook and eye clasp are all custom made from 20k gold. The necklace is 20 inches (50.7 cm) in length. The necklace weighs 19 grams.

Lapis lazuli has visible calcite and golden pyrite flecks. It is a natural color, not dyed. The beads are very old. Each bead was cut and polished by hand, and even holes in the beads were drilled by hand. Therefore, each bead is not ideal but perfect at the same time.
