Ancient Barrel Shaped Agate Beads with Lapis Lazuli and Collared 22k Gold Beads

About the Item

Fifteen barrel shaped agate beads, predominantly carnelian with opaque white and transparent quartz banding. The agate beads alternate with fourteen round collared gold beads. Each of the gold beads are faced with two lapis lazuli beads. Gold ring beads separate the lapis beads from the agate barrels. Gold beading tips and a hook and eye clasp complete the necklace. The dimensions of the agate beads are as follows (starting at top right): 1. Length 8.3 mm, width at center 4.5 mm, width at ends 3.5 mm, hole diameter 2 mm. Unlike the larger beads at the center of the necklace, this smaller bead is probably two thousand rather than four thousand years old. 2. Length 1.12 mm, width at center 5.5 mm, width at ends 4 mm, hole diameter 3 mm. The bead is whitened from burial in alkaline soil and the end has been chipped. A gold tube has been inserted to insure that the bead hangs straight. The large bead hole indicates Bronze Age, four thousand years old. 3. Length 1.2 cm, width at center 7.3 mm, width at ends 5.5 mm, hole diameter 3 mm. Bronze Age. 4. Length 1.7 cm, width at center 7.8 mm, width at ends 5.8 mm, hole diameter 2 mm. 5. Length 2.1 cm, width at center 7.3 mm, width at ends 9 mm. Hole diameter 3.9 mm. Beautiful tapered shape and banding. Large drill hole indicates early Bronze Age, four thousand years old. 6. Length 2.0 cm, width at center 8.5 mm, width at ends 5.9 mm, hole diameter 2.1 mm. Compare to No. 4. plump shape and 2 mm drill hole. 7. Length 2.24 cm, width at center 8.3 mm, width at ends 5.5 mm, hole diameter 3 mm. Some evidence of surface regrinding. Early period, four thousand years old. 8. Length 2.2 cm, width at center 9.5 mm, width at ends 5.7 mm, hole diameter 4 mm. Early period, four thousand years old. 9. Length 2.44 cm, width at center 8 mm, width at ends 5 mm, hole diameter 3 mm. Early period, four thousand years old. Similar shape and proportions to no. 7. 10. Length 2.13 cm, width at center 9.3 mm, width at ends 6 mm, hole diameter 3.5 mm. Compare with center bead no. 8, similar shape and proportions. 11. Length 2.25 cm, width at center 8.5 mm, width at ends 5.5 mm, hole diameter 4 mm. Compare with Nos. 7. & 9, similar shape and proportions. 12. Length 1.8 cm, width at center 7 mm – 8.5 mm, width at ends 6.4 mm – 5.5 mm, hole diameter 2mm. Bead is out of round from surface regrinding. Compare with No. 4 for shape and material. 13. Length 1.4 cm, width at center 7.4 mm, width at ends 5.5 mm, hole diameter 3 mm. Compare with No. 10, similar shape and proportions. 14. Length 1.2 cm, width at center 6.8 mm, width at ends 5 mm, hole diameter 3 mm. Compare to No. 13, similar shape and proportions. 15. Length 7.4 mm, width at center 5 mm, width at ends 3.5 mm, hole diameter 2.1 mm. Compare with No. 1. The thirty lapis lazuli beads are short cylinders or disks with rounded edges. They are 3.5 mm to 4.5 mm in diameter, from 2.5 mm in length to 3 mm. Hole diameter is 2 mm. The fourteen round gold beads are in three sizes: 1 cm in diameter and 9.5 mm in length – 8 mm in diameter and 7.5 mm in length - 7 mm in diameter and 6 mm in length. Each has a collar of grains around the hole. The beading tips are cup like hemispheres with a circlet of flattened wire attached to the sides to provide attachment for the hook and eye clasp. There is a collar of granulation around the hole. The knot for the beading string is hidden inside the hemispheres. The necklace is 19 7/8 inches (51 cm) in length. The necklace weighs 43 grams.
