Large Ancient Roman Rock Crystal and Carnelian Necklace, 1st-2nd century A.D.

About the Item

Rare large scale ancient Roman rock crystal and carnelian bead necklace, approximately 2000 years old, composed of twenty five elongated oval rock crystal beads, interspersed with twenty six spherical carnelian beads, graduated in size with rock beads ranging from 20mm to 13mm long and carnelian beads ranging from 10mm to 3mm in diameter, with a later ancient style gold clasp. The Romans places a very high value on Rock Crystal, believing it to have the power to bring forth a person's finest capabilities and channel positive energy. Rock crystal stone was consecrated to Juno. References: A similar necklace sold at Christie's New York, December 6, 2000, lot 31 Metropolitan Museum of Art- Accenssion Number 13.198.7, on view in Gallery 17, a 1st Century A.D. necklace with rock crystal beads of comparable age and design Very good condition comensurate with age, the gemstones with fine soft patina from being handled with reverence. 56cm long (22 inches)

    Additions or alterations made to the original: Necklace is in very good condition, being ancient it has been re-strung and the gold clasp is a later addition consistent with the style of this piece. All beads show appropriate signs of wear with naturally occurring inclusions. Wear consistent with age and use.
