About the Item

Hand rolled Sugilite beads by Navajo lapidarist Albert Lee (deceased). The 18" five strands of hand rolled beads vary in size from eight to twelve millimeters and are interspaced with silver beads. The heavy gauge sterling silver end pieces are stamped with "Albert Lee of Shiprock NM” on one and an image of Shiprock on the other. Albert Lee from Shiprock, New Mexico has been an active lapidarist since 1993. He learned the art of making jewelry from his father, Alfred Lee. Albert is known for using only the finest high grade stones. Sugilite (also spelled "sugalite") is a deep purple gemstone from South Africa. It is a relatively new stone; the gem material is a by-product and was first described in 1944 by Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi-Sugi and was used extensively in jewelry from the 1970’s. Because of the scarcity of this high-grade ore, this mineral, along with the opal we choose, are the most expensive materials we use excluding faceted gemstones. About the Artist Albert Lee (1980-2022) Albert & Alfred Lee Jr. are sixth generation Navajo jewelers. They were inspired and mentored by their father Alfred Lee Sr., who is himself an award winning artist. Shiprock, NM is home to the Lee brothers. It is there that they go about their business of creating, necklaces, bracelets, Concho belts, rings and squash blossom necklaces with a blend of traditional and contemporary Navajo designs. From the Four Corners area of the Navajo reservation, Albert specializes in magnificent stones, set in designs that are inspired by tradition, but have a modern allure that is timeless. His jewelry has been featured in Ralph Lauren Ads. His pieces are lavish in materials, size, heft and looks. Sensuously finished silver or gold encase the splendid stones. Alberta Lee carries on the family tradition and business with a reputation that has carried him nationwide. Always a delight to talk to, he is gracious and most willing to share his knowledge of the techniques used in his work. Albert Lee jewelry will never be mistaken for old Navajo jewelry. Frankly, it is made and finished too well. While the Lee's clearly pay homage to traditional Navajo designs, they have transformed that idea into modern masterpieces. If you enjoy technical excellence, rare gemstones and contemporary jewelry Albert Lee Jewelry is for you. Albert passed away April 23, 2022
