Jade Necklace Certified Untreated by Ming's Midcentury Chic

About the Item

This multicolor jade necklace from the 1950s or thereabouts was created by the venerable Hawaiian jewelry store, Ming's. Like Gump's in San Francisco, Ming's became known worldwide for their fine jade jewelry, always created using only 100% natural and untreated jadeite and nephrite. This 23" necklace consists of 38 8mm beads of luminous, translucent natural, and untreated Burmese jadeite jade. An additional seven black onyx beads provide a lovely accent to the jade stones -and actually, look exactly like black jade. Instead of being strung on traditional silk, Ming's created this necklace by hand-twisting 14K yellow gold wire into links. This not only makes the necklace even more durable than it would be strung on silk, but it gives the necklace a different drape; a bit weighted, more decisive when it swings. The necklace terminates in the trademark Ming's buckle-style clasp with a brushed finish. The clasp is marked "14K" but there is, typically, no "Ming's" logo. The Ming's stamp appears seemingly at random on Ming's jewelry and sometimes is replaced with a hand-scratched "Ming's" and sometimes there is no logo. Ming's often worked with less common colors of jade. So here we have blood-orange red, near colorless, light blue, black, deep orange, and light apple-green. The beads have excellent translucency and glow as if inwardly illuminated. A spectacular jadeite necklace in a unique and exceedingly appealing palette of colors. This unisex necklace ships with a certificate from Stone Group Labs stating that the jade is untreated jadeite from Burma (Myanmar).

Bright Apple Green Jadeite Jade Necklace Certified Untreated
Located in Southbury, CT
Bright, and filled with light, this radiant Art Deco era (circa 1920s -1930s) necklace is composed of 107 hand-carved and polished natural and untreated Burmese jadeite jade beads. The beads range in size from 4.13mm to 9.38. Overall, the beads are a bright, fresh spring green. I would say "pea green" but that sounds so awful. In truth, the beads are the color of those hard and shiny peas that you see when you crack open the first pod of the season. But these beads are also genetically gifted: they contain little patches of shockingly perfect imperial green, deep forest green, and even a green so faint it reminds me of light green velvet rubbed the wrong way so that light reflects off where you stroked your finger over the velvet and the green velvet is now whiter. Yes, go ahead and say it: the necklace deserves a finer clasp. But does it? This clasp is original to the piece. It was made by hand in the early twentieth century. It's silver and once it was gilt. It's a clasp I've seen on many jade and beaded necklaces from this period and I find the humble nature...
