About the Item

This interesting necklace is composed of 213 translucent nephrite jade beads, each hand-carved and measuring between approximately 4mm and 4.5mm. The beads are a very pleasing sage green and because of their excellent translucency, they are gemmy little beads. But instead of being string on silk and knotted between each bead, like a traditional jade necklace, this 33" long strand is strung on a steel cable wire. And instead of closing with a hook and eye clasp or a box clasp or any other necklace clasp you've encountered, this long and infinitely sturdy necklace closes with United States patent number 3,350,753, which was invented by no other than Wesley W. Hester of California. He was awarded a patent for his cunning necklace clasp in 1967. In his petition for a patent he described it like this: "The primary object of this invention is to provide a necklace clasp which is easily engaged and disengaged by a simple pressing action, the two interfitting parts being designed to engage positively even if the parts are not accurately aligned. This facilitates fastening of the clasp behind the neck when the parts are not visible and makes it feasible to use a small clasp, since there are not buttons, catches, or other devices to be opened with the fingers, either in fastening or unfastening the clasp. Another object of this invention is to provide a necklace clasp which is extremely simple in construction and is not prone to jamming or disassembly in use. Another object of this invention is to provide a necklace clasp which is compact and esthetically pleasing, in keeping with the decorative nature of its use." On all points, this 14K yellow gold necklace clasp succeeds brilliantly. Once you look at the clasp and understand how it works, you can fasten or unfasten it behind your neck with no assistance. It's quite brilliant. And its unique, sleek design is almost architectural. On either end of the clasp are three 14k yellow gold beads. It's a beautiful necklace with luminous beads and a very clever clasp. The steel cable is plastic-coated, the ends are firmly crimped and I see microscopic evidence of glue. All of which means, this is one jade necklace that will never need re-stringing. Wear it surfing, wear it rock-climbing, wear it sky-diving and never worry that the cord will break. The 32" length means you can wear it doubled around your neck or wrapped several times around your wrist for a very cool bracelet. One of the most versatile, unique and, well, durable, jade necklaces I have come across. I believe it dates to the early 1970s.
