About

A charming pastoral Samuel Goldfarb antique enamel vinaigrette scent locket (circa 1900), is suspended from a hand-linked chain of smooth citrine rondelles and intercepted with champagne pearls and petite garnet accents. Although we think of the Victorian period as gracious and elegant - this little scent locket, filled with perfumed wool cotton, was most likely used of ward off the foul odors of the streets.

The front of the locket includes a charming pair of sweethearts greeting one another - while the backside depicts what appears to be two women perhaps consoling one another on the trials and tribulations of love. Opening the enamel lid reveals a beautifully fretted grill, which when removed, uncovers the antique wool cotton that was saturated with perfumed oils and still retains the faintly sweet fragrance.

The makers mark “SG” and “A” on the interior lid indicates a provenance of Samuel Goldfarb who is renown for his Viennese enamel scent lockets. A portion of the garnet colored sides of this locket have been restored by a renown enamel artist to preserve this charming work of art.
