Victorian 9ct Fetter Link and Love Knot Albert Chain, 16.5 inches

About the Item

We love this 9 carat 16.5" long Albert Chain with its slender fetter link (aka paper clip link) connected to a love knot link, in a repeating pattern. The T-bar and ring clasps are stamped 9ct (for 9 carat) and 375. Each fetter link is also stamped 375 and each love knot is stamped with a Birmingham mark and another difficult to distinguish mark. Alberts are named for Prince Albert who popularized the wearing of a vest with pocket watch and a fob on a chain, the watch in the vest pocket, with fob and T-Bar dangling. During the Victorian era, longer links were often employed to cut down on the laborious process of assembling many smaller links, as Alberts and watch chains were assembled by hand. We love the stylish combination of the fetter link and love knot, an important Victorian motif. If you are in search of an Albert with a more slender appearance to add to your “neck mess”, this chain works well. This chain has a yellower gold cast compared to other 9K chains, which you can see in the final photo which shows this chain side by side 2 others listed on First Dibs. This chain is pictured as the center chain in the photo. Listing numbers are shown. Our chain weighs 32 grams.

  • Chunky 9ct Double Fetter and Triple Love Knot Albert Chain, 18 inches
    Located in Baltimore, MD
Each double fetter link on our 18” chunky Victorian albert chain is connected to 3 love knot links with the pattern repeats eight times. The T-bar and dog clips are stamped 9 carat. Alberts are named for Prince Albert who popularized the wearing of a vest with pocket watch and a fob on a chain, the watch in the vest pocket, with fob and T-Bar dangling. Our chain combines the fetter link and love knot link. Longer links like the fetter link were used to cut down on the laborious process of making and assembling many smaller links. We love the double fetter link and triple love knot combination which continues the pattern to the top of the chain with two matching dog clips, which serve as clasps for easily connection and removal. We also love the beefiness of the double fetter links and the love knots as compared to the slim links of most albert chains. The final image shows how our chunky Albert looks next to our 15 carat albert chain...

  • C.1880 Niello Fetter Link and 3 Gold Link Watch Chain
    Located in Baltimore, MD
The rare original Niello watch chain that you have been searching for. Fifty Six inches long, our chain has niello patterned fetter links and alternating triple gold links. The fetter link has a wonderful striped pattern wrapped around a gold link, the ends of which link to the triple gold links. An unusual construction, indeed. Niello refers to the ancient technique of decorating silver which was revived in the 19th century and adopted by English jewelry artisans. The word niello derives from the Latin form of niger, meaning black. The patterns are created by engraving geometric or floral patterns on silver and filling the recesses with an alloy of silver, copper, lead and sulphur. The alternating 3 ring links with their rose gold colors compliment the niello links. The necklace includes a niello dog clip in a matching pattern. Niello chains can be worn with silver or gold or niello pendants. The chain does not have a clasp, simply wind it two or three times around your neck and wear with a pendant or without. The last photo in our array shows our 4 niello watch chains and how they look side by side. The niello fetter link chain...
