Torque by Ilias Lalaounis

About the Item

Antique torque spirit, amati gold, ended by 2 balls in black onyx, signed, circa 1970-1980. Ilias Lalaounis (1920-2013) embodies the modern renaissance of antique gold. ABOUT the CREATOR Ilias Lalaounis was born in 1920 in Athens; He comes from a family of goldsmiths and watchmakers from Delphi. To this day, he remains the only jeweler to have been inducted under the dome of the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. These creations give a predominant place to gold which he treats in a shimmering patina evocative of the 24 carat jewelry of ancient Greece. Before turning to the family business, Lalaounis studied law, economics, commerce and music and trained under the Greek painter Alexandros Alexandrakis. A sensitive and emotional education which will guide his artistic and unique approach to jewelry. He thus took over the management of the family business in 1940. The impact of the Second World War encouraged him to a patriotic celebration of the history of his country, whose great artistic symbols he reinterpreted, while confronting them with a new modernity that fascinates him. The exceptional Ilion necklace, presented here, is an eloquent example of this. Inspired by a terracotta sculpture exhumed from the archaeological excavations of Troy, he magnifies the victory of his people over the city of King Priam, thanks to this long, astonishingly beautiful necklace, whose refined carving is intended to adorn a princess modern like Jacqueline Kennedy who became Jackie O since her marriage to the Greek billionaire Aristotle Onassis in 1968. In 1957, Lalaounis presented the first of his “collections” in Thessaloniki, continuing to draw his sources of inspiration from archaeology, the classical golden age of Greece and Hellenistic Baroque. In 1969, he founded his eponymous house, Ilias Lalaounis SA. For his 1970s collection, “Blow Up,” he featured gold pieces inspired by Minoan art on the bodies of his models. When he opened his store in Tokyo at the same time, he presented a collection inspired by Japanese art. Later, he imagined a collection paying tribute to Native Americans for the launch of his store on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. In 1976, the jeweler carried out one of its most important orders, designing a collection inspired by Persian art for Empress Farah of Iran. In 1984, Lalaounis exhibited his unique creative vision with the release of his monographic book, Métamorphoses. By the 1990s, the jewelry house had stores throughout Europe as well as in Tokyo, Hong Kong and New York, and its works were exhibited at the National Museum of American History and the Penn Museum in Philadelphia. In 1994, he founded his own eponymous museum in Athens at the foot of the Parthenon, with a permanent collection of pieces from his personal collections. Ilias Lalaounis died in 2013. His approach to jewelry based on research into the techniques and forms of ancient Greek jewelry, combined with an innate sense of modernity and purity, gives his creations depth and strength. , which make them works of art in their own right in the sense that the artist is the one who creates a new world while drawing inspiration from the great masters of the past, like Picasso, Rodin or Koons.
