Vintage Signed Napier Black & Goldtone Puzzle Piece Collar Necklace, 1986
About the Item
Modernist goldtone and black resin "puzzle piece" collar necklace with fold over clasp. Marked "Napier." Center: 1 3/16 inches long. Overall measures: 6 3/4 inches long by 5 3/4 inches wide. Interior circumference about 16 1/4 inches. Condition: Very good; minor wear- a few beads are a little less shiny, but not really noticeable. An identical necklace is shown on pg. 604 of Melinda L. Lewis & Henry Swen's book "The Napier Co.: Defining 20th Century American Costume Jewelry.
Vintage Napier jewelry was made in Meridan, Connecticut and is very high quality and desirable. In the 1950s, jewelry by Napier was worn by celebrities including Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day, Mamie Eisenhower and Miss America. A necklace sold by Napier in the 1980s or 1990s could cost $100 or more. The plant in Meridan was closed in 2000 and the company sold in 2002, so while the company name still exists, the jewelry is now mass produced.
