This is a spectacular museum quality antique Edwardian 43 Carat Black Star Sapphire and Seed Pearl Garland Suite. The suite comprising a necklace, bracelet and earrings each with black star sapphires, which total approximately 43 Carat total weight. The gorgeous black star sapphires and pearls are set in 10 Karat Yellow Gold in a motif of foliate vines tied by ribbon bows. The suite of jewels represents extraordinary design in the pantheon of Victorian - Edwardian garland motif jewels. The suite dates to the Edwardian Period, circa 1905.
Provenance: The jewels are from the estate of Muriel Gluck, the esteemed patron and philanthropist of the arts in New York, Los Angeles and San Diego. From her Los Angeles Times obituary: "Muriel Gluck, a philanthropist who gave millions of dollars to support the arts and education, primarily in Los Angeles and San Diego. From the early years of her marriage to retail magnate and race horse breeder Maxwell H. Gluck in the late 1940s, she was an art collector who also appreciated classical music. The couple established the Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation. A very fine example of high Victorian era jewelry, this silver topped 14K gold (front- silver, back – gold) pendant is designed as a flower head centered with a natural untreated Burmese ruby of a pinkish purplish red color framed by chunky old mine cut diamonds. The principal eight diamonds, which surround the ruby, are top quality bright white stones. Such excellent quality old cut diamonds are rarely seen in antique jewelry. The diamonds are bright white and very sparkly.
The ruby measures 9.28 x 7.94 x 2.22 mm and is approximately 1.31 ct.
The two antique cushion cut diamonds at 12 and 6 o’clock are approximately 1.28 ct (6.22 x 5.75 x 4.5 mm, G color, VS2 clarity) and 1.32 ct (6.18 x 6.14 x 4.4 mm, G color, VS1 clarity). The six smaller diamonds around the ruby are approximately 0.51 ct, 0.48 ct, 0.46 ct, 0.48 ct, 0.52 ct, and 0.44 ct (F-G-H color, VS2 – SI1 clarity).
Estimated total diamond weight is 7.18 ct.
The pendant is 28 mm (1 1/8 in.) long and 23 mm (7/8 in.) wide.
