About

One-of-a-kind period necklace for opal aficionados and Edwardian period collectors alike. A spectacular Lightning Ridge black opal weighing approximately 20 carats - this translates to 1" by 1 1/8" - is framed with a single row of older cut diamonds, leading up to a filigree platinum and diamond motif and and antique cut diamond chain encircling the neck. See attached GIA and AGL certificates. The Lightning Ridge opal fields were discovered in Australia in the 1880's, and the first shaft was dug in 1901; the find was mined out by about 1913. A large black opal displaying this amount of red and orange color flash is exceptionally rare and desirable. The opal changes in appearance with each motion, as the play of color is the result of natural layered striations in the material. This collector's jewel is a perfect fusion of Edwardian elegance and a truly phenomenal gemstone.
