Lillian Kalan Brutalist Sterling Necklace with Geode
About the Item
This unusual necklace has a chic, brutalist quality. The combination of the "crumpled" and pierced silver with the amethyst geode setting gives it a raw, modern kind of feel. It has an impressive three-dimensionality.
It was designed and made by studio jeweler Lillian Kalan. Her work was included in the 1964 "Crafts Horizons" magazine's special issue on "The American Craftsman". It highlighted work by the finest artisans of the period, selected by the American Craftsmen's Council. In 1956 the Council had opened the Museum of Contemporary Craft in New York city.
