A very very long chrome and carved Galalith lariatt/sautoir, Jakob Bengel, 1930s

About the Item

An elegant and stylish Art Deco necklace designed and made by Jakob Bengel, with red and black carved Galalith terminals, two colours so characteristic of the Art Deco movement. The necklace is made of a very fluid serpentine chain in chrome metal, with a 'fixed', unmoving 'knot' motif, and the two terminals hanging from that, in two separate pendants, the Galalith set in chrome metal tubes. There is no wear to the chromed metal and both Galalith pieces are perfect, no chipping or other. Would look wonderful worn with simple white or grey, chic, the long upper chain should wrap twice to make a shortened necklace. Similar necklaces are illustrated in 'Bengel Art Deco Schmuck Jewellery' by W. Lindemann (Arnoldische), pages 16 and 67. Jakob Bendel was a chain and costume jewellery factory, founded by Jakob Bengel in 1873, in Germany. In the 1920s and 1930s, it became one of the leading manufacturers of fashion jewellery in the Art Deco style. It was during the Bauhaus and Art Deco period that designers were looking to obtain new materials and inspiration to produce costume jewellery. Inspired by French Avant-Garde, and other fashion innovators, such as Coco Chanel, Bengel started to produce experimental jewellery. The jewels, manufactured between 1924-1939, combined brass and chrome with geometric shapes of coloured Galalith. They have become highly collectable items.
