Early 19th Century French Rock Crystal and Pearl Necklace

About the Item

An early 19th century French rock crystal and pearl necklace, the necklace set with thirty oval red foil-backed links, each link composed of a faceted rock crystal set within a closed-back cut-down yellow gold collet with natural pearl surround, each large cluster link alternating with two smaller ones, the central cluster suspending two smaller clusters, total length approximately 42cm, gross weight 22.43 grams, bearing French hallmark for gold 1798-1809, circa 1800, This necklace is in very good condition , signs of bruising to rear of collets and historical restoration. An alluring and historical necklace from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. This necklace was created in France at the turn of the 19th century, a time of both turbulence and magnificence. Following the French Revolution, which began in 1789, France had a series of different governments before Napoleon Bonaparte was appointed First Consul in 1799. The era of Napoleon ushered in a new era of both fashion and jewellery. This wonderful necklace features thirty rock crystals, each foiled in a beautiful strawberry-red and each framed by a halo of natural seed pearls. During this period, the ornate styles of the French court were replaced by simple empire waist gowns with low neck lines, which would have been accessorized by necklaces such as this one for evening events.
